Kalojam 500g

Kalojam is a dark Bengali sweet soaked in sugar syrup, sold in a 500g pack. "Kalo" means black: like gulab jamun it is fried and then soaked, but its dark, almost black colour comes from sugar caramelising as it fries. Kalo jam is one of the two jamun sweets Bangladesh is known for. It is delivered chilled; store as directed on the pack.

How to use

• Serve one or two pieces per person with a spoonful of the syrup.
• Hand them round to neighbours and relatives when there is good news to share.
• Pair with a cup of milk tea after a rice-and-curry meal.
